JUNE 2010 NEWSLETTER SPECIALS

Some New Winter Warmers and Mid Year Clearance Specials....

Dear Wine Lover,
Later this month we will need to conduct the end of financial year stock take, and so have some more great deals to offer you. Firstly, we have a great value range from one of Australia's most awarded wineries, and for many years now their Hanwood range have done very well on the wine circuit. Much of this success has been due to McWilliams's policy of sourcing at least 20% of each Hanwood wine from their premium vineyards in significant Australian viticultural areas throughout the country (including Hilltops in NSW, Heathcote in Victoria, Margaret River in WA, and the South Australian regions of McLaren Vale and Coonawarra)
These wines normally sell for at least $13 bottle, but we are offering them to you at the special price of under $9 bottle .. $107 by the case.

And a completely new wine style to try ...........
Lagrein is a red wine grape variety native to the valleys of northern Italy, but is extremely rare outside of this region. The variety was pioneered in Australia by Dr. Peter May of Burnley Campus who discovered a couple of vines in the "vine library" of the Australian Government research organisation (CSIRO) at Merbein in northeast Victoria, and planted them in his small vineyard at Kyneton in 1988. It is thought that the total area of Lagrein cultivated in Australia is likely to be less than 50 hectares (120 acres), compared with approximately 43,000 hectares (110,000 acres) of Shiraz/Syrah.
Producers in South Australia have propagated cuttings from mother vines grown in the South Australian Government facility at Nuriootpa, and there are now a couple of examples of Lagrein commercially available which have been blended with Dolcetto (also an Italian variety that has minimal plantings in South Australia... and one on the market which is a Shiraz blend) but as a single varietal wine Lagrein can be extremely astringent. To manage this, winemakers give the wine long periods of barrel maturation (18 months) or for younger fresher wines, pre-fine the juice to remove tannins before fermentation. Lagrein produces a very deep red coloured wine with earthy, coffee ground characters, and some cherry flavours on the finish.
The bottle that we tasted is a 2009 vintage from Langhorne Creek; and is very well made. However, there was nowhere near enough produced for a commercial bottling so we could only get our hands on a few dozen. Winter is traditionally the season for enjoying red wines, so we will include a couple of bottles in each case of our ‘Winter Warmers Dozen’ for you to try for yourself. We have also chosen a few top drops from the cellar and added a couple of other new releases, and put together another really interesting mix of wines for you to taste or hide away for a few years.

Taylors Wines have around 500 hectares of vineyards in the Clare Valley, and have again been collecting many domestic and international awards over the past couple of years. They were recently awarded four Gold Medals at the 2010 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, an elite show which has been labelled the `wine world championship'. The latest vintage of Taylors Shiraz 2008 was the recipient of one of these awards, and it also has a Blue Gold Medal from Sydney International and Silver at the International Wine and Spirit Competition 2010. It is one of many medal winners which you will find in our Premium Mystery Mixed Dozens; along with some remaining of the picks from our Wine Show Dozens and boutique winery specialties. And don’t forget the latest mix of ‘Rats and Mice’ ... they will also contain a few other new release wines that we have tasted and enjoyed as well as some well known labels including Wolf Blass, StoneHaven, Reilly’s, Ballast Stone... and many others. They are great value, and ready to order on the back page.

And don’t forget our range of cleanskins from the last mail out. They are made by very well known wineries and are still available at only $89 dozen.
